CarMax—a progressive shift towards AI networking

By Trent Fierro, Blog Contributor

Building in hassle-free AI operations

When the goal is to be number one in your market, great organizations work together to find an edge, often with the IT team playing a major role in facilitating “what’s possible.” The trick is to get everyone on the team to lean forward, think differently about their roles, and embrace a new way of doing things. Often it just takes the right driver.

That’s exactly what happened at CarMax. Ken Shaffer, VP of Infrastructure and Operations at CarMax, worked with his teams to determine where they were spending time and what it would take to strengthen business opportunities through strategic technology planning and execution. He did some research regarding the use of AIOps and AI networking solutions and determined that identifying a proactive way to see what was happening on the network would help fix or minimize issues.

By choosing the right solution, where infrastructure, data lake and AI networking models all work together, CarMax would gain an optimized end user experience without requiring expensive upgrades or engineering resources. He just needed his teams to realize that technology could augment their efforts so that more of their time could be spent on the big stuff, not on troubleshooting problems.

Here’s where HPE Aruba Networking ESP (Edge Services Platform) came into the picture. ESP is a combination of unified infrastructure, AI networking (with network and security insights) and HPE Aruba Networking Central (our cloud management solution). AIOps and automation are built in and help with troubleshooting and optimization insights. And AI-powered search helps with everything from learning how to add an SSID to seeing how an individual user’s network experience has progressed throughout the day.

A few areas where AI networking helped:

  • Identifying gaps or coverage holes
  • Detailed config and optimization recommendations
  • Providing data that shows performance and usage patterns that are hard to collect manually

The shift to using AI networking from HPE Aruba Networking has gone so well that Ken talked about his team’s efforts at Atmosphere 2023 in Las Vegas this past April.  In fact, here’s a link to a short video where you can hear Ken talk about his team and how proud he is of their efforts and the HPE Aruba Networking relationship.
