HPE Aruba Networking showcases expanded Axis Security SSE and ZTNA capabilities and unified SASE at Black Hat USA 2023

By Jon Green, Chief Security Officer

At Black Hat 2023, HPE Aruba Networking will showcase its expanded edge-to-cloud security portfolio, designed to help organizations improve protection within their hybrid cloud environments.

Introducing Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA) on premises

ZTNA is top of mind for enterprises looking to efficiently extend Zero Trust policy-based access control to on-premises workloads, regardless of how a user or device connects to the network.

To protect and connect critical applications that are increasingly spanning multiple clouds, such as generative AI, supply chain management, and patient records, HPE Aruba Networking is introducing local deployment capabilities to its Security Service Edge (SSE) ZTNA solution. With locally deployed ZTNA, organizations can extend the same granular policy-based ZTNA controls that protect cloud applications to all workloads within the corporate environment—without requiring an on-premises user to “hairpin” traffic to the cloud when accessing data center and private cloud resources.

At Black Hat, you’ll hear more from HPE Aruba Networking about how its flexible ZTNA solution can now enforce on premises the same access policies that have been defined for the public cloud—addressing existing hybrid cloud security challenges that previously added inefficient latency into user transactions or prevented organizations with compliance requirements from adopting fully cloud-hosted infrastructure. Using this flexible ZTNA solution with HPE Aruba Networking ClearPass Network Access Control means both users and IoT devices can be covered by Zero Trust access control policies that leverage both the corporate network and the cloud for enforcement.

Enhanced SSE for better protection against threats

HPE Aruba Networking will also showcase several new capabilities that enhance protection against common—and emerging—malware-based attacks.

To strengthen defenses against malware-based threats like ransomware, a new sandbox feature enables organizations to test suspicious files in a safe virtual environment and destroy malicious files before they cause damage.

New sandbox features from HPE Aruba Networking enable organizations to thwart ransomware attacks by destroying malicious files before they cause damage.

In addition, new intelligent threat protection with reputation-based blocking capabilities can minimize the effect of web-based attacks, such as phishing and SEO poisoning. Employing smart algorithms and real-time data to assess risk can prevent users from accessing dangerous URLs.

At Black Hat, HPE Aruba Networking will also showcase the capabilities of existing Axis Security SSE solutions, including:

  • Secure access to AI data with HPE Aruba Networking ZTNA for secure access to large language model (LLM) data, and secure web gateway (SWG) to block access to AI sites based on organizational risk preferences
  • Universal Zero Trust for the workplace leverages Axis Security's ZTNA module and HPE Aruba Networking ClearPass Network Access Control to allow Zero Trust secure access for users, devices, applications, and data based on clearly defined access control policies

Unified SASE for the modern workplace

HPE announced the acquisition of SSE provider Axis Security in March 2023, standing out in a field of SASE competitors and providing HPE with what CEO Antonio Neri called the “most comprehensive edge portfolio in the industry.” The acquisition closed in March 2023.

With the addition of Axis Security’s cloud-based SSE platform, HPE Aruba Networking’s edge-to-cloud security portfolio expanded its capabilities to enable secure access to corporate and public cloud resources, building on HPE Aruba Networking’s existing EdgeConnect secure software-defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN) and next-generation firewall capabilities. This combination provides a complete edge-to-cloud unified Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) solution, ensuring Zero Trust security controls can be applied to people and devices, no matter where they connect—on campus, branch, home, or on the road.
