How Wi-Fi 6 TWT Benefits Battery-Powered IoT Devices

By Tim Vanevenhoven, Blog Contributor

Wi-Fi 6 contains a new feature for battery powered IoT devices called TWT (Target Wake Time).  This allows an access point to define a specific time or set of times for IoT devices to access the wireless network. This new functionality has a significant impact on IoT device battery life since not all devices need to be transmitting regularly to stay on the network.

The scheduled time between transmissions could be minutes, or even days or weeks. This also helps optimize spectral efficiency by reducing contention in an area with a high density of IoT devices.

See five Wi-Fi 6 use cases in this at-a-glance PDF.
