Take a Fresh Look at Aruba Campus Switches for Federal

By Dolan Sullivan, Vice President of Federal at HPE Aruba Networking (Retired)

Keeping our nation safe and enabling agencies to work productively is not an easy job for any federal IT leader. Agency staff want modern technology to do their jobs more efficiently, and that means more mobile devices and more cloud services. Cyberattacks and successful breaches are unprecedented, as the very nature of warfare is evolving. Agencies are becoming more customer-focused, making digital services and the citizen experience greater priorities. And as always, there’s intense pressure to achieve mission and operational objectives, but with overarching cost efficiency.

To accomplish their objectives, federal IT leaders need strong, secure, mission-grade networks. By modernizing the campus networks, IT can strike down obstacles that legacy switches present: higher costs, more support needs and more downtime. New switches are faster, more intelligent, more secure and easier to manage.

More Choices for Deployment

Now, federal IT teams have more options when choosing campus switches for their modernization efforts.

Key Aruba switches are now available on the DoDIN Approved Products List (APL). These switches and other Aruba solutions also meet a broad variety of other federal mandates, including FIPS 140-2 and Common Criteria.

Aruba’s ArubaOS-8 products have completed testing and are expected to be listed soon for DISA’s DOD APL. The approved switches include the Aruba 5400R Series Switch, a high performance, modular Layer 3 switch; the Aruba 3810M Series Switch, a stackable Layer 3 switch; the Aruba 2930M Switch Series access switch; and the Aruba 2930F Switch Series, also an access switch.

Build Mobile First Networks

Aruba switches are an essential element in the Aruba Mobile First Architecture, which provides secure, intelligent, nonstop network experience on a single, open, software-defined architecture. An Aruba network makes it easy to securely connect mobile devices, wired devices and the rapidly growing number of IoT devices—and making it easier to deliver a consistent user experience from campus to branch.

An Aruba Mobile First network is purpose-built for the digital era, enabling IT to modernize and transform the network to more easily deliver on mission and objectives. At the same time, IT can simplify the network, lifting the burden of administrative complexity.

One of the decided advantages of an Aruba Mobile First network is the ability to enforce policies consistently across wireless and wired. It’s a combination of a capability that we call Dynamic Segmentation and Aruba ClearPass for secure network access control. The Mobile First architecture provides the underlying building blocks that enable Federal IT groups to deliver next-generation access networks with simplicity and security.

In short, through features like Dynamic Segmentation and products like ClearPass, Aruba gives you secure, flexible control over the access layer, only allowing appropriate traffic from a specific user or device to traverse the network infrastructure. Policies, such as quality of service, access control lists or rate limits are enforced consistently at the switch or controller. Traffic from wired devices are subject to the same firewall and strong security as wireless devices. With Dynamic Segmentation, there’s no need to create VLANs across the network to the access edge or create static mapping for ports. The Aruba switches, mobility controllers and ClearPass work together to enforce consistent policies for users and devices across wired and wireless.

At Aruba, our philosophy is “Customer First, Customer Last,” and we believe that’s why so many branches of the US government and armed services depend on Aruba networking. We’re also pleased to earn industry recognition, like being recognized by Gartner as a Leader in Wired and Wireless Access Infrastructure for 13 years running.
