Is it Asset Tracking or RTLS?

By Tim Vanevenhoven, Blog Contributor

Asset Tracking refers to knowing the location of a physical asset or person.  One example is tracking a package with a barcode or passive (non-powered) asset tag being delivered to your house.  You can know when your package was placed on the truck for delivery, but until it is scanned and delivered, the exact location of the package is not always known to you.

A RTLS (Real Time Location System) is a subset of asset tracking systems where the location of the asset is always known.  Asset tags used in an RTLS are usually active (powered) to enable continuous monitoring.  An example is always knowing the location of a bed or infusion pump in a hospital.
