Apple iOS 10 Beta Displays Security Recommendations

By George Stafanick, Blog Contributor

Apple released iOS 10 beta to developers this week. As a Wi-Fi guy I like to keep up with beta releases, one to see what is coming down the pike for my enterprise users and two Im nosy when it comes to Wi-Fi related changes.

One change jumped out at me, it was the "Security Recommendations". I discovered in iOS 10 wireless network settings, Apple offers words of wisdom for their cult followers.

When connecting to an open unsecured wireless network you will see the following:

OPEN WIRELESS NETWORK

Open networks provide no security and expose all network traffic.

Configure you router to use WPA2 Personal (AES) security type for this network.

802.1X WIRELESS NETWORK

Interestingly when connected to a 802.1X wireless network with a hidden SSID you see these comments:

Using a hidden network can expose personally identifiable information.

I'd like to know what Apple means by sharing personal identifiable information when the SSID is hidden?

What is your take on these settings ?

Configure your router to broadcast this network.
